An out-of-date Google Business Profile can leave customers with the wrong hours, services or contact details. Keeping those facts accurate is useful regardless of which search experience they use.
Google announced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026, as a conversational way to explore places in Maps. It introduced a new search experience; it did not announce a new Google Business Profile ranking rulebook. Read Google’s Ask Maps announcement for the launch details.
Clear services, accurate hours and useful photos help customers understand a business. Ask Maps may draw on Maps information and other sources, but a fuller profile does not guarantee an AI recommendation.
Why This Is Showing Up Now
Google’s published local-ranking guidance focuses on relevance, distance and prominence. Improve your profile around accurate information and customer needs rather than an assumed new algorithm or an arbitrary posting schedule. See Google’s local-ranking guidance.
Relevance concerns how well a business matches a search. Distance concerns how far it is from the searcher or specified location. Prominence concerns how well known it is, including signals such as links and reviews. Photos and updates can help customers without every activity being a confirmed ranking factor.
Incomplete information can make a business harder to evaluate. That is a practical reason to improve the profile, without claiming that Google automatically penalizes quiet accounts.
Keep Information Current
Google does not publish a 30-day inactivity threshold after which a profile loses rankings. Update information when it changes and share useful news when you have it. Relevance, distance and prominence remain the published local-ranking framework. Google explains those factors here.
None of this means you need to become a full-time Google Business Profile manager. It means the profile needs to stay a living part of your marketing, not a form you filled out once.
A Short Checklist for This Week
Keep the business name, address and phone number accurate across your website and important listings. Correct meaningful discrepancies; a minor formatting variation is not evidence that Google has suppressed the profile.
Complete the fields that accurately apply to your business. Use relevant categories, real services and current hours; do not add details just to fill a field.
Publish a useful update when you have genuine news, an offer or customer information to share. There is no confirmed weekly posting quota that improves rankings.
Respond to reviews promptly and professionally for the benefit of customers. A one- or two-day response window is a customer-service choice, not a Google-published ranking threshold.
Check how your business is described in search and AI answers, then compare the facts with your website and profile. Answers can vary by location, account and prompt; a single response is not a diagnostic ranking test.
Where This Connects to AI Search
Google, ChatGPT and other AI tools use different systems and sources. Clear information can make a business easier to understand, but it does not guarantee selection by any platform.
Next Step
Some information updates are straightforward. Verification, access problems and website changes can take longer, so review the gaps before agreeing on the work and its timing.
Take the first step today, or look at our Google Business Profile services if you know you need a hand getting it into shape.
